Helpfinder - How to Set up VNC

The following screens will describe how to set up VNC on IDA computers.

Step 1: Download the TightVNC binary from here.

Step 2: Launch the program.

Step 3: If you get a security warning, such as this one:

click RUN, or otherwise tell Windows to run the program.

Step 4: Accept all the defaults, except on the Select Components screen.  When the program asks for installation type:

choose Compact installation.

Step 5: Continue to accept the defaults.  It is very important that you do not register the software as a service:

so leave those two boxes unchecked as shown above.

Step 6: Continue through and finish the installation as normal.

Step 7: Manually Start the VNC server, by going to Start -> All Programs -> TightVNC -> Launch TightVNC Server.

Step 8: The server should give you an error message, and then open the settings box.  On the first tab, configure the settings as shown:

Specifically, you want to set a password, and make sure all checkboxes are set as shown above.

Step 9: Click on the HOOKS tag, and configure that screen exactly as shown:

Step 10: Finally, click on the ADMINISTRATION tag, and configure that screen exactly as shown:

That's it, you're done!  Click OK to close the window, and the VNC server will be running.

If you look for the little "V" icon in the lower-right toolbar, you'll see that you can mouse-over it to get the system's current IP address, and you can right-click it to stop the server if you want to.  In the future, the user needs only choose to start the server as shown in step 7, above, and the icon will quietly appear and the server will quietly start.  Too easy!
